Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is considered part of South Asia. Known as the Republic of Maldives, the country is directly south of India and southwest of Sri Lanka. The Maldives is an archipelago that rests between the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Comprised of an estimated 1,200 islands, the Maldives is not completely occupied.
